FREE EDUCATION IN BENUE
Yesterday, HIS EXCELLENCY, REV. FR. DR. HYACINTH IORMEM ALIA, THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF BENUE STATE, made his resounding speech on THE OCCASION OF THE 63RD ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF NIGERIA’S INDEPENDENCE AT THE OLD BANQUET HALL, GOVERNMENT HOUSE, MAKURDI.
A plethora of issues were talked about, but my attention was caught up on item 14:
"As we re-engineer and implement policies aimed at making Benue the envy of other states, we recognize the importance of a well-educated populace as a panacea to most of the challenges we face. It is in this light that, as part of long term palliatives for the removal of fuel subsidy, we have decided to pay for this year’s examination fees of all students in government approved public secondary schools in the state sitting for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations respectively. This would also serve as a stimulant in creating a literate and proficient society which ensures that citizens are availed with opportunities for life-long achievements".
As much as I applaud this gesture, I equally think His Excellency can take a more superior approach.
Before then, how will WASSC and NECO candidates in private, community, and non approved schools feel about the exclusion from the favor?
Like I was saying, what is worth doing is worth doing well. So, Governor Alia should consider a more dynamic and inclusive Education policy for the people by doing three things:
1. Declare free education from Primary to Secondary School. Education is free in Western States, it can be free in Benue too.
3. Pay Scholarship Allowance to students in tertiary institutions up to N30k per session. This will ease their studies and add value to their lives.
Our Governor had pronounced a mantra that impresses on us that He is the Governor for the people, so his moves should favor all the people.
What is good for one is good for all.
