2 kids kidnapped in Makurdi
Guarding your kids in the face of kidnappers
King Jessevich.
As we flow through MBER Months Keeping kids safe from kidnappers is a top priority for parents and guardians.
Just two days ago (Sunday 24th September, 2023), two kids from one family disappeared close to Saint Peter's Catholic Church Wurukum Makurdi, a development that is tormenting to the parents, friends and the entire Makurdi.
The kids in the picture with yellow indications namely: Philomena kpaakpa (girl) 4years and Benedict Kpaakpa (boy) 2years were the victims.
Here are some important tips to help protect children:
1. Teach Awareness: Teach your children about personal safety, including not talking to strangers, and knowing their full name, address, and phone number.
2. Buddy System: Encourage the buddy system, where children are safer when they are with a friend or family member.
3. Know Their Friends: Be aware of your child's friends and their parents. Get to know the people your child spends time with.
4. Safe Routes: Discuss safe routes to school or other activities. Teach them to avoid shortcuts through secluded areas.
5. Emergency Contacts: Ensure your child knows how to contact you or other trusted adults in case of an emergency.
6. Recognize Signs: Educate your child about signs of suspicious behavior and how to react, such as yelling for help and running away.
7. Safe Havens: Identify safe places your child can go if they feel threatened, such as a trusted neighbor's house or a public place.
8. Emergency Drills: Practice emergency scenarios with your child, like what to do if someone follows them or tries to abduct them.
9. Trust Your Instincts: Encourage your child to trust their instincts. If something doesn't feel right, they should leave the situation and seek help.
10. Community Involvement: Be active in your community, and encourage a sense of community watch. Get to know your neighbors and their children.
11. ID and Photos: Keep updated identification records and recent photos of your child in case they ever go missing.
12. Law Enforcement: If your child goes missing, contact law enforcement immediately. Make sure you report to the Police, Vigilante timely.
As much as possible, let us not leave room for ritualists, kidnappers, and child traffickers to deprive us of our children, from September till always.
